VLC Media Player not playing MKV files

Some of my MKV videos don’t play in VLC. The audio works, but video is black. Any idea how to solve this?

Update VLC to the latest version. Older builds had codec issues with some MKV files.

Go to Preferences > Input/Codecs > Disable hardware decoding. That fixes black screen for some users.
